Le cancer dont souffre la voisine ronge aussi la société thaïlandaise, coincée dans le carcan des coutumes et des superstitions et l'univers impersonnel du monde urbain d'aujourd'hui. L'homme moderne y fait son chemin dans la vie au prix d'un individualisme acharné, de la suppression des bons sentiments, de tout ce qui faisait la saveur des rapports sociaux d'antan, et trouve une manière de compensation, piètre et pernicieuse, dans les délices tarifés de la « ville enchantée ».
