Un chasseur à la poursuite d'un chevreuil qu'il a blessé se perd dans la jungle et se trouve à son tour pourchassé par un tigre. Après une nuit de terreur et d'apitoiement sur son sort, il trouve suffisamment de courage pour confronter le roi de la jungle.
Sur ce canevas des plus simples, l'auteur a construit un roman très riche et très complexe sur la découverte de soi, coloré par des descriptions superbes de la jungle. Le héros, typique des militants gauchises des années 70, découvre que la plupart de ses craintes et de ses tourments tiennent à sa propre nature, et apprend l'importance primordiale de la maîtrise de soi et de l'équanimité.
Par son intensité, son cadrage et son style, cette fable allégorique n'est pas sans rappeler Le Vieil homme et la mer.
